With decades of experience, our lawyers know the transportation fuels industry at every level: from planning to production, from structuring to financing, from ethanol to renewable natural gas, from carbon credits to renewable identification numbers (RINs) and Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) credits.
Our team advises and collaborates with clients to bring new zero-carbon and low-carbon fuels to market to serve a growing market, decarbonize their operations, replace current fossil fuels and leverage new innovative technologies to make the process more cost-effective. This is particularly important for heavy industries such as marine shipping and long-haul aviation and trucking.
Our lawyers advise plant owners, operators, developers, traders and industry associations, construction companies, equipment manufacturers, renewable energy companies, airline and aviation companies and suppliers involved in renewable fuel projects, including biodiesel, ethanol, sustainable and zero-carbon fuel substitutes. We are one of the few legal advisors serving all alternative fuel lines, and our team assists prominent industry participants in ethanol, biodiesel, renewable diesel, RNG and biogas, hydrogen sustainable aviation fuel, renewable electricity and all forms of associated environmental credits, including RINs, LCFS credits, carbon allowances, offsets and renewable energy credits (RECs).
Our team includes some of the leading practitioners in the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) and state low-carbon standards and clean fuel programs—the laws that are driving the decarbonization of transportation fuel in the United States. We have been involved in every significant development of those programs and the development of nearly all the industry standard terms to trade low-carbon fuels. We draw upon this deep regulatory and commercial knowledge and combine it with our multidisciplinary practices of Projects & Infrastructure, Private Equity, Renewable Energy and Hydrogen to help our clients accelerate their low-carbon and zero-carbon fuel goals.
We collaborate with our Government Law & Strategies group and leverage the strength of our relationships with government, policymakers and industry leaders to assist clients in developing, designing, constructing and assisting with acquisitions, dispositions and financing of transportation fuels. We provide guidance on regulatory developments, rulemaking ligation and renewable fuel disputes. Our experience allows us to provide comprehensive service to our renewable fuel clients on all phases and aspects of their transactions and projects. Many of our lawyers spent decades working at the EPA, addressing a variety of cases involving air pollutants, including greenhouse gases and working on climate change legislation and regulation, as well as the carbon sequestration strategies to reduce emissions.
