Insurance Recovery & Advisory counsel Tamara Bruno has been recognized by Law360 as one of its Rising Stars for 2017, earning her a place on their list of lawyers under 40 whose legal expertise surpasses their years in the industry.
The list contains a total of 156 lawyers, and Bruno is one of only five Insurance lawyers to be acknowledged. The winners were picked by a team of Law360 editors after reviewing more than 1,200 submissions for the list.
Law360’s profile of Bruno highlights her work as part of the team that secured client Lion Oil Co. a $72-million verdict in a suit over denied business disruption coverage. After a ruptured pipeline was shut down for almost a year, AIG and other insurance carriers denied coverage despite Lion’s limited production capabilities.
“That was one of those cases where, more often than not, you would expect the carrier to have seen the light and to have worked it out.” Bruno told Law360. “But with AIG they decided to take it all the way, and that one went all the way and was also a successful jury verdict for us.”
When asked about the biggest case of her career, Bruno described her involvement in representing NYU Langone Medical Center in a $1.4-billion coverage claim, a case she has been involved with since she started as an associate with Pillsbury three years ago.
"There are insurance coverage issues in that case that are interesting and different," she said. "When you have such a big claim, the insurance carriers really dig in their heels and they'll fight things they wouldn't normally fight and bring up creative things that they wouldn't normally bring up."
Bruno became interested in insurance law when she was exposed to cases resulting from the financial crisis and got to see the variety of industries it covered.
"I was interested in insurance because there's nothing it doesn't touch," she told Law360, referencing work she has been involved with in the energy, healthcare and nonprofit industries, among others.
At Pillsbury, Bruno advises and represents companies and institutional policyholders in complex insurance matters. She works with insureds by: providing risk management advice and representation in disputed claims; advising on insurance programs and risk management efforts; and representing them in disputed insurance claims. Her experience spans a broad spectrum of business insurance across a wide range of industries.
